Copain, which means pal or buddy in French, embraces the view that wine is best shared in the company of friends and family. Perched on a hillside overlooking the Russian River Valley, the winery sources its fruit from cool-climate vineyards in Mendocino County, the Anderson Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Winemaker Ryan Zepaltas crafts Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and Rhône-inspired Syrah. Copain’s three distinct collections – Tous Ensemble (“All Together”), Les Voisins (“The Neighbors”), and single vineyard wines – are all sustainably farmed, lighter in alcohol, and food-friendly. A visit to Copain’s charming tasting room is a wine-country must!

Ryan Zepaltas’s path to winemaking was an unconventional one. He grew up in Wisconsin, where beer is poured more often than wine, and, after college, moved to California, to pursue his passion of skateboarding. When shredding didn’t pay, Ryan found a job working harvest La Crema. That harvest stint turned into a two-year job, followed by a second stint as a harvest intern in New Zealand, where Ryan had the epiphany that he wanted to become a winemaker. Back in the states, he worked his way up from cellar master and assistant winemaker to winemaker at Siduri and launched his own label in 2004, Zepaltas Wines. In 2018, Ryan accepted his dream job as Copain's winemaker and general manager for Copain. If you’re lucky, you just might catch Ryan carving turns through the cellar on his skateboard.
